Possession Point Ferry Wreck

Recommended type of dive: Boat

How to dive this site: Dive here only on a slack period. Anchor your vessel above the wreck, which lies roughly 250 yards south of Possession Point. The name of the wreck is Kehloken and was built in 1926. It is 240' long and 50' wide. The wreck, sunk in February 1983 by the state of Washington, is an old passenger ferry, its wooden and metal structure is surrounded and under tons of concrete used to sink it. There are many rockfish, lingcod and greenling that live inside the wreck. An occasional crab may be found on the sandy/muddy bottom of 60 - 80', depending on the tide.

It is not advisable that you go inside the wreck since it may finish collapsing at any time. This is also a fishing reef, take caution as there is lots of fishing line that divers can get tangled in.

It is a good idea to have someone in the boat to come get you on the surface should the current pick up. Also you should display a dive flag and alpha flag since this is a high boat traffic area.

HAZARDS: Fishing line, current, boat traffic, and a collapsing wooden wreck.

GPS Coordinates: To Buoy (N. 47 53.80 W. 122 23.14); To Wreck (N. 47 53.82 W. 122 23.56); To Boat Ramp (N. 47 54.73 W. 122 22.55).

Directions to the site: Launch your vessel at the Langley Marina, Everett Marina or Mukilteo State Park and head to the very south point of Whidbey Island known as Possession Point. The reef lies approximately 250 yards south of shore and .03 of a mile west of the Green Bell bouy in 65 - 75'. Smaller boats can be launched at the Possession Point Park at the end of Possession Road. The dive site is approximately 1.5 miles from this ramp if going around the green navigation marker.
